Navigating VA Home Loans

Guaranteed Rate and the USO have joined forces to support service members and their families in navigating the home buying process! Buying a house or understanding your VA Home Buying Loan benefits can be challenging, so they've brought in the experts to assist. This workshop is open to Active Duty, military spouses, National Guard, Reservists, and recently separated veterans. Those that attend will learn about their VA Home Loan eligibility requirements and understand the lifespan of the VA Home Loan. The workshop will include a step-by-step process of buying a home, from finding the right house, to financing, closing and more!

Understanding Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) Information Session

Fellow service members can have the same pay, rank, years of service, and contributed the same amount to the Thrift Saving Plan (TSP), yet at retirement, one could have a balance three or more times greater than the other. The difference would be the choices each made within their TSP.

The Financial Empowerment Center is Open During COVID-19! They have moved all our FREE services virtually and are here to serve our Northern Virginia veterans. Take advantage of their one-on-one coaching sessions such as financial coaching, financial mentoring, workforce development coaching, resume review, network up mentoring, personal income tax coaching, and small business coaching.

Free Financial Workshops

Join Veterans Mental Health Advisory Council at the Washington, DC VA Medical Center and its nonprofit HUD Housing Counseling partner, USA HomeOwnership Foundation (VAREP), for a series of free Online Zoom Workshops for those having financial hardships due to the Covid-19 crisis. They will offer three 45 minute workshops on Credit, Rent and Mortgage that will cover ways to improve your credit, rental protections in the federal CARES act, and working with your lender when you have mortgage issues due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Retirement & Financial Readiness

Join the American Armed Forces Mutual Aid Association as they review seven key decisions that service members must make when transitioning from service. The seminar discusses how to approach each decision and also how to best make choices given the individual circumstances. Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP), VA Disability, Life Insurance, Medical & Dental Insurance, Long Term Care coverage, and Social Security options are reviewed.

College Financial Aid Information Session

Join the VA ACME- Advisory Council on Military Education on how to Apply for Financial Aid: FAFSA. Learn the ins and outs for starting the FAFSA process, as well as some very helpful and unique tips for streamlining the process. Ask questions and direct answers from those who know the process best.

Financial Empowerment Center Virtual Courses

Concerned about your finances during COVID-19? The Financial Empowerment Center will be offering several virtual workshops to help cope financially during this challenging time. The FEC also provides Financial Coaching sessions available in English and Spanish and can help clients to re-organize their finances and budget during this crisis. Coaching can be provided over the phone or with a video conference. Services are free & open to the entire community.

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia conducts an annual grant cycle through the Community Investment Funds. Nonprofit organizations or organizations providing charitable or educational services in Northern Virginia are invited to apply.
