Maryland’s Commitment to Veterans 2021 Veterans Behavioral Health Symposium November 16 and 17, 2021

The Maryland Department of Health’s program Maryland’s Commitment to Veterans is excited to announce our Fall Veterans Behavioral Health Symposium. During the virtual symposium, participants will engage each other utilizing small group activities, role playing opportunities, and/or large group discussions to develop a better understanding of the unique behavioral health needs and challenges of service members, veterans, and their families (SMVF). Participants will acquire greater competency in working with SMVF by exploring the barriers to access, stigma, ethics, intimate partner violence, and substance use in this population. Strategies for promoting resilience and health seeking will be discussed. This training is for behavioral health providers who want to develop a better understanding of the challenges and evidence-based/best practice treatments for each topic area when serving their SMVF clients. The symposium will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days allowing attendees to participate in either day or both days and still receive CEUs.

Presentation Topics:

We are seeking proposals for concurrent virtual sessions on November 16 and November 17. The presentation will be geared toward behavioral health providers, county mental health departments, local behavioral health boards and commissions, community-based organizations (CBOs), other key service agencies, peers, family members, religious and spiritual leaders, and other stakeholders. We intentionally invite people from historically marginalized communities and individuals with lived experience to present.

This year’s virtual conference will be composed of three separate tracks. Each track will consist of two one-hour workshops on day one and one two-hour in-depth workshop on day two. Please be sure to indicate on the presenter form which track you will be presenting: 1) Complementary and Alternative Medicines/Treatment, 2) Intimate Partner Violence, or 3) Substance Use Disorder.
