Building Networks of Support for Service Members, Veterans, and their Families

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) SMVF Technical Assistance (TA) Center will host a webinar that highlights three examples of VSOs and other veteran initiatives that are partnering with the community to better serve the behavioral health needs of veterans and their families: (1) The George W. Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, (2) the Cohen Veterans Network, and (3) the Student Veterans of America. Participants will learn how they can work together with these organizations and others to strengthen their community’s network of support. Registration is required.

Project Opportunity Small Business Program beginning in September

Project Opportunity offers an intensive 10-week small business program for Veterans that meets one night a week and is facilitated by business professionals and subject matter experts. They will be holding an upcoming 10 week session beginning September 25 in Leonardtown, MD. To learn more, check out their orientation on September 7 at 6:30 pm. Training and materials are provided FREE to veterans, but space is limited. Register now.

Military Appreciation Day at National Portrait Gallery – Aug 26

Blue Star Families will be hosting a Military Family Appreciation Day at the National Portrait Gallery as part of their Blue Star Museums program on Saturday, August 26 from 11 am - 1:30 pm. There will be live a bluegrass band, private tours with a curator, kids' activities and popcorn!

Registration for the DC VA Mental Health Summit 2017 Extended to Aug. 18th

The Mental Health Summit will bring together key stakeholders and community partners with the goal of enhancing access to mental health services and addressing the mental healthcare needs of Veterans and their family members. This year's theme will be "Justice Involved Veterans". Registration is required.

DC Small Business Boot Camp – Sept 25

The DC Mayor's Office of Veterans Affairs (MOVA) and the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) at Community Business Partnership are pleased to offer a one day intensive Small Business Boot Camp designed to introduce prospective entrepreneurs to the fundamentals of small business start-up and to help you determine the feasibility of your business idea. Monday, September 25 from 9 am - 5 pm at the DC Mayor's Office of Veteran Affairs in Washington, D.C. Seating is limited to members of the military community who are interested in starting and growing their small business. Members of the service professions (CPAs, attorneys, real estate agents, financial representatives, etc.) who wish to do business with Veterans will not be admitted.

New Virginia Military and Veteran Legal Resource Guide

Attorney General Mark R. Herring today launched the Virginia Military and Veteran Legal Resource Guide, a new tool to help Virginia servicemembers, military families, and veterans utilize the unique legal protections, rights, and resources available to them under the law. Volunteer attorneys from the Office of Attorney General spent more than a year developing the new guide which is available at www.VaMilGuide.com and will be distributed in hard copy and electronically in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, veterans' service organizations, and more.

Loudoun Launches Coordinated Entry System

Loudoun County's Continuum of Care has launched a Coordinated Entry System (CES) Intake Line for homeless services for emergency shelters, homeless prevention and diversion and rapid re-housing. CES Intake Line is available at (703)777–0420 from Monday – Friday 8:00AM – 4:00PM.
