Supporting Military Caregivers in the Workplace
Few experiences are as universal as caring for a loved one. With nearly 40 million people nationwide serving as family caregivers, the physical, financial, emotional, and psychological effects of being a caregiver – or supporting one – touch the lives of virtually every American. And nowhere is the stress of caregiving felt more acutely than in the workplace. With one in six employees in the U.S. caring for a loved one 18 or over, employment and workplace issues for caregivers are verging on a national crisis that demands the attention of every employer.
Within the population of family caregivers lies a subset of caregivers providing support to our nation’s wounded, ill, and injured veterans and servicemembers. For the more than 5.5 million military caregivers across America, challenges with employment and underemployment can be particularly overwhelming. Roughly 47% of post-9/11 military caregivers and 23% of pre- 9/11 military caregivers have reported needing to make workplace adjustments due to their caregiving responsibilities.
AARP, Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation – Hiring Our Heroes invite you to a special event to learn more about how business leaders can combat the employment challenges military caregivers face in their own workplaces.
