African-American Veterans History Day

In honor of African-American History Month: The Mayor’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs has partnered with DC Public Library to host: DC Veteran History: A Day of History and Service.

Veterans of all ethnicities and eras are welcome to join us for a day of history, memories, and storytelling. With a special invitation to Vietnam War era veterans, MOVA invites you to share your story and reflect on the experience of DC veterans.

• Veterans Writing Workshop with local veteran and published writer Nick Mann, focus on how to use writing to tell the veteran’s story.

• Veterans will have the opportunity to be interviewed by trained interviewers for participation in the Library of Congress Veterans History Project

• Learn how to utilize the DC Public Library Memory Lab technology to preserve your physical and digital possessions.

The Veterans History Project (VHP) collects and preserves the firsthand interviews and narratives of America’s veterans from World War I through the present. In addition to audio- and video-recorded oral history interviews, VHP accepts memoirs and collections of original photographs, letters, diaries, maps and other historical documents from veterans who served in the U.S. military, in any capacity, from WWI to the present, regardless of branch or rank, and are no longer serving. VHP relies on volunteers, both individuals, and organizations, throughout the nation to contribute veterans’ stories to VHP.
