Fairfax County Veteran Treatment Docket Graduation – Jan 25

FAIRFAX VETERANS DOCKET CELEBRATES GRADUATION

The Fairfax Veterans Treatment Docket will celebrate with a graduation ceremony Thursday, January 25, 2018, marking the successful completion of twenty-four months of comprehensive treatment and supervision by one military veteran. The ceremony is set for 2:45pm in courtroom 1E at Fairfax County Court House, 4110 Chain Bridge Road, in Fairfax, Va. The public is invited.

The guest speaker will be Mr James Weber, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps who served 29 months in Vietnam. His varied career path has included working in arts management, an Ohio River tugboat, being a backcountry ranger, and construction management for the federal government and Fairfax County.

Judge Michael Lindner remarked “We ask much of our men and women in uniform and they ask little in return. We are ultimately responsible for ensuring that whatever effects they suffer in the mission of defending our nation will be treated. They emerge with pride, ready to engage their families and community with the dignity and honor they learned during their service in the United States military.”

Since February 2015 selected veterans have offered the opportunity to participate in an intensive court-supervised treatment program. The Fairfax Veterans Treatment Docket is designed to address the mental health and substance abuse issues often resulting from the combat stresses of military service.

Since 2008 more than 230 court supervised Veterans Treatment programs have been created in court rooms in the United States. The goal of these programs is to restore the veteran to the community and the family, capable of facing the future in a productive way without re-offending and without resorting to alcohol or drugs.

The Fairfax program began in 2015 under Judge Penney S. Azcarate in the General District Court and a Circuit Court Veterans Treatment Docket was established last year. Today, Judge Michael Lindner presides over the General District Court docket and Judge Azcarate presides over the Circuit Court docket during the twice-monthly hearings.
