Technical Assistance Center Presents:

Increasing Access to Behavioral Health Resources for Military and Veteran Children and Families

Date: March 12, 2020

Time: 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. ET

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) Technical Assistance (TA) Center will host a webinar focusing on increasing access to resources and supports for military and veteran children, families, and caregivers. Military and veteran families and caregivers often face unique challenges. Families and caregivers play a critical role in the lives of our service members and veterans by helping them access services and supports. Providing resources and strategies to increase outreach and access to caring contacts can enhance the work of community service providers and peers using a comprehensive public health approach to support military families and children.

A presentation from Dr. Patricia Moseley, Senior Policy Analyst for Military Child and Family Behavioral Health at the Defense Health Agency, will discuss some of the recent increases in access and changes to policy for TRICARE for military kids. Exciting changes have made it easier for military families to qualify for TRICARE health plan coverage. In addition to these changes, accessing providers in rural areas has improved and there are better access options for substance use treatment at different levels of care. A presentation from Erika R. Slaton, Associate Director of Military Community Support Programs at the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy, will provide insight into the U.S. Department of Defense’s prevention efforts for military families, including the Military Family Life Consultant and the Military OneSource Call Center. Melissa Comeau, Director of the Military and Veteran Caregiver Network (MCVN) at the American Red Cross, will provide examples of how the MCVN is offering peer-based support and services to connect those providing care to SMVF with access points to behavioral health resources.
