The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been taking rapid steps forward in strengthening the accountability, accessibility, and quality of behavioral health care for veterans. This webinar will explore some of the emerging changes and provide participants an overview of unfolding policies and programs that will impact the behavioral health care of veterans.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) Technical Assistance (TA) Center will host a webinar that provides a policy-level overview of the VA’s recent efforts to increase access to behavioral health care and address suicide prevention. Areas that will be covered include the expansion of emergency mental health coverage to veterans with other than honorable discharges, the initiative to eliminate veteran suicide, MyVA community collaborations and partnerships, changes to the Choice program, plans for the adoption of a new electronic health record system, and other behavioral health access initiatives.

Learning Objectives:

•Explain mental health policy changes related to other-than-honorable discharges
•Discuss the initiative to eliminate veteran suicide
•Explore MyVA community collaborations and partnerships
•Identify emerging changes to the Choice program
•Describe plans for the new electronic health records system that will enable increased collaboration with community providers
