Uncommon Coders – Learn Java at no cost

Northern Virginia Technology Council is pleased to announce a new program under the Veteran Employment Initiative (VEI) for 2017- Uncommon Coders.  Northern Virginia Community College has partnered with the NVTC Veteran Employment Initiative to provide a no-cost course teaching the Java programming language to a cohort of up to 20 Veterans and military/Veteran spouses.  Java is arguably the world’s #1 programming language today- over 15 billion devices run Java and it is the top platform for development in the cloud.  The course normally costs $14,000 but is free to accepted Veteran and military spouse students.  As you know, so much of our future economy is tied to the technology sector and for many of our transitioning military members, they desire to enter this career field but do not have the skills to gain access- this is an incredible opportunity to open that door!!

Here are the program details:

  • The course instruction runs Monday – Friday from 9:00-5:00 starting 6 February 2017 for 12 continuous weeks (no spring break!)
  • Maximum class size is 20 Veterans and military/Veteran spouses
  • Outside class individual and team project work
  • Uncommon Coders must be the participants’ primary focus
  • Class requires a laptop computer; other key computer specifications will be provided
  • All prospective candidates must fill out our Uncommon Coders application (http://www.nvcc.edu/workforce/uncommon-coders/index.html)
  • Candidates interviews will be conducted to ensure minimum requirements are met for student success
  • Uncommon Coders classes are taught by instructors from The Iron Yard at the new state-of-the-art Regional Workforce Center on the Northern Virginia Community College’s Woodbridge campus
  • Employers are committing to hires of graduates- current companies include SAIC and Vencore
