Virginia Women Veterans Week – March 17-23

Commonwealth Will Recognize Service of Women Veterans During Virginia Women Veterans Week, March 17-23

The Commonwealth will officially honor all women who served in the U.S. military during Virginia Women Veterans Week, March 17-23, 2019.

This marks the second year that the state will devote a week to recognize the service and sacrifice of the more than 104,000 women veterans who call Virginia home. Virginia boasts the highest percentage of women veterans per capita of any state in America.

In announcing the commemorative week, Virginia Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs Carlos Hopkins said, “Throughout the history of our Commonwealth and our Nation, women have served with distinction as a vital part of our military. I have personally served side-by-side with women while on active duty and continue to serve with women enlisted personnel and officers as a member of the Virginia Army National Guard. Their dedication, energy, leadership, and sense of duty is outstanding and is one reason our armed forces are the finest in the world.”

Beverly VanTull, who was named to the newly-created position of Women Veteran Program Manager at DVS in September 2018, said, “As a woman veteran, I am proud that Virginia is giving this special and well-deserved recognition to the contributions of women to our military. These women are our co-workers and neighbors, our mothers, aunts, daughters and sisters. Not only have they unselfishly served our country, they have returned to the civilian world as leaders in government and business, and of their families and communities. Our Commonwealth is stronger and economically healthier because of their presence here.”

VanTull noted that special events and ceremonies recognizing the contributions of women veterans will be held in Richmond, and throughout the state during Virginia Women Veterans Week. These events include exhibits and programs at the Virginia War Memorial, at the Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond, the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke, and more. “Registration is now open to attend the 6th Annual Virginia Women Veterans Summit which will be held at the Embassy Suites in Hampton May 16 and 17,” VanTull added. “We will have a great line-up of nationally-known speakers, seminars and programs at this two-day event. I encourage all women veterans to join us.”
