Workhouse Military in the Arts Initiative

WMAI provides free, weekly therapeutic and/or fine arts Open Studio opportunities that are exclusive to the military community for veterans to explore their creativity through structured and open-ended art experiences such as painting, sculpture and drawing. Open Studio sessions are intended to foster creativity and encourage experimentation in a safe, communal atmosphere of cultural exchange, conversation, and freedom of expression. Open Studio occurs every Saturday from 12-3 PM in Warrior Way Art Studio in Building W-16. The second Saturday in each month is Family Open Studio Day, where veterans bring family members for a day of military family creativity.

Tuition Assistance for Service Members & their families!

Those who serve in the armed forces face unique challenges, such as frequent moves, unusual work schedules, stress, trouble sleeping, and more. These challenges make it increasingly difficult to participate in social activities that can benefit a student’s mental, behavioral and social health. The WMAI understands these challenges and is honored to back our military through tuition assistance in support of a service member’s personal goals in the therapeutic and healing qualities of the arts. Students are permitted one subsidy, per student, per quarter and must apply by providing a one-page, cover letter that demonstrates financial need and explains how taking the course will benefit them either behaviorally, socially, mentally or physically. We have money to give YOU and YOUR FAMILY so don’t hesitate to apply!

WMAI is seeking a Visual Artist-in-Residence!

The Workhouse Military in the Arts Initiative (WMAI) Studio Artist Residency is a grant-funded studio space where Visual Artists can utilize a unique workspace to create art, creatively grow within a community of artists, learn the business of art, and sell their artwork while gaining professional visibility. Open to any Military Veteran, Retired Veteran or Active Service Member who is interested in pursuing or perfecting their Studio Practice while working with the WMAI program. The Workhouse will provide a working studio space, solo exhibition and group exhibition opportunities, and gallery space to sell work. In return the WMAI AIR acts as an ambassador for the WMAI program, teaches short workshops, monitors Veteran Open Studio and assists whenever possible to strengthen the WMAI program.

All artists are juried into the program. The Workhouse selects artists that:

·     Are innovative in production and concept, culturally relative, and demonstrate a technical

mastery of a media.

·     Participate in juried shows, curated exhibitions or are represented in private collections.

·     Show a commitment to their artistic career through an existing body of work.

·     Create all original art and concepts.
