VA-ACME Scholarship Opportunity

This year, more than one million service members, veterans and their families are enrolled in college courses. With that in mind, the Virginia Advisory Council on Military Education (VAACME) continues a commitment to supporting education within the Virginia military and veteran community. They are pleased to announce that VA-ACME will award multiple $1,000 scholarships. The application deadline is April 3, 2020.

Join USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore and the Virginia Advisory Council on Military Education (VA-ACME), this workshop will focus on scholarship opportunities for students as well as discussion using GI Bill benefits and Yellow Ribbon Fund.

NOW ENROLLING: NAMI Homefront Online 

Registration is now open for NAMI Homefront Online Courses beginning in January 2020. NAMI Homefront is a free, 6-session program for family, friends and significant others of military Service Members and Veterans. The class helps families understand what the Service Member/ Veteran is experiencing related to trauma, combat stress, civilian life transition, PTSD and other mental health conditions. Registration is required.

Project Opportunity Information Session Jan 22

University of Maryland Study Seeks Veterans

Have you experienced a traumatic event in your life? Do thoughts about this experience affect you now? Do you use alcohol to get relief?  The University of Maryland is conducting a research study of a medication that may help people who have experienced a traumatic event feel better and drink less. Veterans are encouraged to participate in this study.

Veterans Book Club

Join the Howard County Library System on the first Sunday of each month beginning on January 5, 2020 from 1:00-3:00 PM for their Veterans Book Club. Held at the Central Branch 10375 Little Patuxent Pkwy, Columbia, MD. Lunch and all reading materials are provided. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions. This is free and open to veterans only please. Registration is required.

Freer|Sackler Family Day with Hokusai

Blue Star Families invites you to attend a family workshop and tour of the new Hokusai Exhibit at Freer|Sackler! The workshop, The Art of Japanese Fabric Wrapping, will give you the opportunity to make a furoshiki wrapping cloth. Saturday, January 11th from 2:00-4:00 PM in Washington DC. Open to active-duty personnel, Guard, Reserves, veterans, wounded warriors, caregivers, EFMP members, and their families. Space is limited. Registration is required.

Mental Fitness Jan 25th

Hosted by Workhouse Military in the Arts Initiative, this workshop introduces veterans and their family members to a variety of yoga and fitness (cardio, strength-training) oriented exercises and movements that help to reduce negative symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, chronic pain and other mental health concerns experienced by veterans, their family members and caregivers as part of the ongoing challenging aspects of military life. By the end of the workshop, attendees will learn basic fitness strategies (as coping skills) to successfully manage military life stressors, thus improving military family functioning and resiliencies. Saturday, January 25th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Free to Active Duty, Veteran, Retired Veteran, and Family of Military. Registration Required.

Veterans Curation Program Meet & Greet Jan 23rd

The Veterans Curation Program in Alexandria VA invites you to their Meet & Greet on Thursday, January 23rd from 10:00 AM - 2:00PM. Visit at your leisure during that time. The VCP provides vocational rehabilitation and innovation training to twelve recently separated veterans using archaeological collections administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Come out and meet the veterans currently enrolled in the program and learn more about the VCP.

Ceramics and Glass Flame Working Classes

Are you an Active Duty, Retired, or Veteran Service Member wishing to learn the Art of Pottery and Ceramics or Glass Flame-working alongside other Service Members in a caring, educational and fun environment? The Workhouse Arts Center still has space available for their upcoming Ceramics and Glass Flameworking classes which will begin in January 2020.  Classes are held at their facility in Lorton, VA.
